Hello Conquerors!

April was a beautiful month with perfect weather for GetFit fun with our fitness team – Liz, Carole, and Vianca - and guest trainer Advisory Board Member Pandora Larsen. They have more fun in store for us this summer with creative field trips to beat the heat!

Our Garden is thriving and the garden committee had the amazing opportunity to cook with Chef Ken Harvey in the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort kitchen, preparing a tasty dish for our birthday pot luck with fresh produce from our garden. Add to that all our fabulous TCC cooks and you do NOT want to miss our pot lucks! Thank you Chef Ken and Loews!

April was also a great time to hit the road on our amazing annual wellness retreat! Thanks to the generous gift from 100+ Women Who Care About Tucson, we were able to reduce the cost of the retreat and accommodate a record number – nearly 50 participants – this year. It continues to be a  member favorite providing respite from life’s daily demands with  guided activities, educational workshops and an opportunity for members to get to know one another better and have some fun! The whole experience brings new meaning to the words, “We’ve got your back!”

Summer is coming and the committees have been busy making plans- they can always use more help! In addition to our field trips to beat the heat, we are adding to our lending library and hosting guest speakers at our educational events. Dermatologist Dr. Scott Scheftel will be joining us at Coffee Café in May to share information on skin health, skin aging and cancer prevention. Make sure you check the calendar because it is getting full!

Also, we will be holding the Annual Report meeting in August because we are just so busy! We look forward to sharing a review of the year, financial data, Board membership information and plans for the future. See you there!

Hope to see you all soon,

The Tucson Cancer Conquerors Board

P.S. - We are once again participating in the Jim Click "Millions For Tucson" Annual Car Raffle and we are asking members to join the Board in helping sell as many tickets as possible! This is a fun and easy way to help us raise money for our programs since TCC receives 100% of proceeds from all raffle tickets we sell. This year Mr. Click is giving away a 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 valued at $47,000!

You can pick up raffle tickets any Tuesday or Saturday during a scheduled GetFit class or you can email info@tucsoncancerconquerors.org to have tickets mailed to you. The raffle tickets are one for $25 or five for $100.

TCC Garden News

We have transitioned over most of our plots from winter veggies to summer veggies. We've got beautiful looking small plants of tomatoes, beans, peppers, squash, eggplant, cucumber, and basil; however, most things probably won't be ready for harvest until early June.

We still have swiss chard available for harvesting. Swiss chard is a nutritional powerhouse -- an excellent source of vitamins K, A, and C, as well as a good source of magnesium, potassium, iron, and dietary fiber. Did you know swiss chard is in the same family as spinach and beets?  If you're not familiar cooking with swiss chard, here are two great recipes to inspire you.

• Sauteed Swiss Chard with Onions

• Swiss Chard Tart

As the temperatures start to climb, we will need to be moving our gardening times to earlier or later in the day.  If you're interested in helping out in the garden, contact Dawn for exact days and times. You can reach Dawn at 520-975-4839 or timdawnmesser@gmail.com.

TCC Coffee Café

Even if you don't come for exercise class, please join us at the TCC Coffee Café to share a snack, socialize and hear about all our upcoming activities! The Coffee Café happens after every Saturday morning right after exercise class at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor's Center.

Please consider signing up to bring Coffee Café snacks one Saturday this year. You can always partner with another member to make it easier, and you can be sure we will appreciate whatever snacks you bring! Speak to Jenny Waters for more information.

TCC Resource Room

We invite you to come down the hall to the Resource Room on Saturdays during Coffee Café. After announcements, bring your coffee and snack, and settle into comfy furniture while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.

Our highlighted book of the month is “Mom’s Marijuana”, by Dan Shapiro, which you will find in the Personal Stories section. Dan Shapiro is a clinical psychologist, author, and cancer survivor. In this hilarious, high-spirited, sometimes harrowing memoir, Shapiro invites us into his battle with cancer, his romance with an oncology nurse, his journey through graduate school, and his most important life lessons.
