Hello Conquerors!

May was a beautiful month filled with activities and fun!

The Cancer Conquerors hit the road for a field trip to Boxing Inc. where they donned hand wraps and packed the gym for some high intensity bag and foot work. One of our members commented that she wasn’t sure she could do it, but the boxing experience turned out to be “really fun but sweaty…”  We call that exercise and are so proud that not a single Conqueror threw in the towel at the workout! Coming to GetFit class really does make a difference.

After the workout we enjoyed taking a break for breakfast together at the Cartel Coffee Lab. We want to thank Ray and Brianna from Boxing Inc. and Lauren and Kim at the Cartel Coffee lab for such a fun morning. We also want to thank Dr. Scott Sheftel for his donation to cover the cost of this event.

With record attendance for our monthly luncheon we filled the dining room at La Paloma Country Club with members and many first time guests. We want to welcome all the new faces and are so glad you found us. We certainly hope we see you all again at some of our many activities.

At our monthly birthday dinner we were honored to have as our featured guest Jean Baruch RN PHD, founder of Beads of Courage for children. Our group was so inspired by her program that we are hosting an event at our Coffee Café to create bracelets for the critically ill children in her program. We look forward sharing this amazing experience with our members and giving back to our Tucson community.

With the end of our fiscal year in July comes the rotation of board member terms. Board members commit to 2 years of service and rotate in staggered terms to provide for continuity and stability of our organization. Officers Mary Specio-Boyer, President, and Liz Almli, Treasurer, will be completing their terms July 1. We would like to thank them for their service to our organization!

As the outgoing President, Mary will transition to the Executive Director role. She has committed many hours over her tenure as President creating a sustainable Non-Profit infrastructure, building an inclusive and participatory culture with all our members, and assuring accountability in our process and records. It has been a highlight in her life and she looks forward to continuing her service to TCC.

After careful review of applications, the board recommended and voted that Liz Almli assume the office of the President for the next board term. She is passionate about the members, excited for the future of TCC, and honored to serve in this position.

We would also like to welcome Debbie Davis to the board as our new Treasurer. She has been an invaluable asset to our organization in her active role as Advisory Board Member. Her resume as a CPA is impressive and she has extensive experience on the boards of non-profits. She will be a wonderful addition to our governing Board. Detailed information on board member responsibilities and term rotations will be presented at our Year End Review meeting in August. We hope that you will attend.

We encourage everyone to get involved in our many TCC committee opportunities. Committee work is a great way to learn more about the Board process and be involved with the group. The Board values this experience as a jumping off point for those interested in serving on the Board in the future.

Have a wonderful June, and we will see you at the Beads of Courage event this month, as well as the many other Get Fit, Get Social and Get Support activities!

Hope to see you all soon,

The Tucson Cancer Conquerors Board

PS - Please join us Friday June 10th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM for a very special event at Kendra Scott Jewelry at La Encantada. During this three hour period, they will donate 20% of all sales to Tucson Cancer Conquerors!

TCC Garden News

Our garden is growing by leaps and bounds. Our cherry tomatoes are starting to ripen and soon we will be buried in squash!

Zucchini are one of the very low calorie vegetables, providing only 17 calories per 100 grams, and they are loaded with antioxidant properties.

Click here for a recipe for a delicious Easy Orzo Salad with Zucchini and Feta.

As the temperatures start to climb, we will need to be moving our gardening times to earlier or later in the day.  If you're interested in helping out in the garden, contact Dawn for exact days and times. You can reach Dawn at 520-975-4839 or timdawnmesser@gmail.com.

TCC Resource Room

We invite you to come down the hall to the Resource Room on Saturdays during Coffee Café. After announcements, bring your coffee and snack, and settle into comfy furniture while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.

Our highlighted book of the month is The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen by Rebecca Katz.  “Filled with humor, compassion, beautiful photography, over 150 recipes and a wealth of useful information, The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen brings the healing power of delicious, nutritious foods to those whose hearts and bodies crave nourishment.”
