Hello Conquerors!

Time flys when we are having fun! We kicked off July with our monthly Tuesday Birthday dinner at the park. Chef Ken was in rare form as he demo-ed the proper way to select and safely cut a watermelon into a delicious cool summer treat. Thank you chef for sharing your mad culinary skills and for being an amazing supporter of TCC.

The Fitness team is always changing things up and in July we welcomed a guest appearance from Tracy Kivisto, Tucson’s only Oncology Certified Fitness Trainer.  Tracy brought music, new moves, lots of positive energy, and fun to the Get Fit workout! We are so appreciative of the time and expertise that she and all of our guest trainers generously donate to our members.

TCC loves to give back and this month we are collecting items for a unique American Cancer Society auction basket representing all of our healthy survivorship programs. Perhaps your passion is to garden, cook, exercise, read, meditate, or hike…

Drop your items off at Saturday morning coffee café and join us for breakfast while you are there. Not feeling creative? We would love to include gift cards for healthy restaurants, grocery stores, body treatments, bookstores, cooking classes and whatever else soothes the mind, body, and soul! So many of us have benefited from the incredible work of the American Cancer Society and we want to support this terrific cause. Click here to learn more about this event.

And finally… August brings the Annual Meeting and it will be a big one! We would love to share with you where we’ve been and all the great places we are headed. We want everyone to participate in the plans for our future. We value financial transparency and a full fiscal report will be provided to the membership. We wish to thank the Board members that have served with such passion over the past two years. With the support of our members, these energized and committed individuals have served to build a foundation for our group that will carry us into the future. Please Join us!

See you soon!

TCC Get Fit News

Yes, GetFit class makes your muscles stronger, but did you know our exercise program is also good for your bones? Like muscle, bone is living tissue that responds to exercise by becoming stronger. Bone mass peaks around the 3rd decade of life and after that…it’s all downhill! This bone loss is accelerated by many cancer treatments leading to osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) and making us susceptible to fractures and an unhealthy hunched over posture.

Not only does regular GetFit exercise improve your bone health, it also increases overall muscle strength, coordination, balance, and FUN.

Our walking group is growing and going strong. If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and Join us!

Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life.

Tiptoe if you must, but take the step. ~ Gethealthyu.com

Get Fit class is focused on functional fitness - strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. Anyone at any fitness level can do this! Classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 7:00 AM.

Exercise Class Payments

The cost for a three month class session is $50 for one class per week, or $75 for two classes per week, and we appreciate payment in the first month of each quarter.

Great news! We can now process a credit or debit card payment at any TCC event with our Square! Please see Joanne Gouldin or Deb Heilig if like to take advantage of this option to pay for class with your credit or debit card. You can also use a credit or debit card to pay online through Paypal in the Members Area of our website, and of course you can still pay with cash or a check payment, (checks payable toTucson Cancer Conquerors). Check or cash payments can be given to either Annie O'Connor or Joanne Gouldin.

TCC Garden News

Despite the heat of July, our garden has continued to provide us with a variety of delicious organic produce. This is a picture of our harvest from July 5th.

Tomatoes and some other veggies do stop producing fruit when temperatures get too high.  Other plants, such as Japanese eggplant (the purple and white veggies in the middle of the photo), flourish. Eggplant, also known as aubergine, is a very low calorie vegetable, high in fiber, and antioxidant phenols, which have been shown to exhibit anti-cancer effects.

Eggplants act as sponges and will soak up the flavors of any sauce they are cooked, making a great addition to marinara sauces and Asian curry dishes. However, care must be taken when cooking as they also soak up oil.

Click here for a no-fry recipe for Baked Eggplant Parmesan.

With the hotter days we have moved our gardening times to earlier or later in the day.  If you're interested in helping out in the garden, please contact Dawn at 520-975-4839 or timdawnmesser@gmail.com.

TCC Coffee Café

Even if you don't come for exercise class, please join us at the TCC Coffee Café to share a snack, socialize and hear about all our upcoming activities! The Coffee Café happens after every Saturday morning right after exercise class at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor's Center.

TCC Resource Room

We invite you to come down the hall to the Resource Room on Saturdays during Coffee Café. After announcements, bring your coffee and snack, and settle into comfy furniture while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.

Our highlighted books this month are guides to help us give loving and empathetic support to a friend or relative going through a hard time.  We are all "buddies" sometimes:

• How To Be a Friend to a Friend Who's Sick by Letty Cottin Pogrebin

• When Cancer Strikes a Friend (What to Say, What to Do, and How to Help) by Bonnie E. Draeger

• "Is There Anything I Can Do?" by Sol Gordon

We would also like to give sincere thanks to Rocky LaRose for her generous donation of a great selection of books for the Resource Room!
