Hello Conquerors!

What better way to celebrate the month of October than with our pot luck birthday celebration. Chef Ken Harvey did not disappoint! Chef provided an educational (and oh so tasty) demo creating fresh table side guacamole using peppers from our garden and a secret ingredient… pomegranate seeds! Thank you to Chef Ken and his son Austin as well as Billy Stern, owner of Stern Produce, for donating the delicious healthy produce for our event.

October is Breast Cancer awareness month and to kick off the ACS Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk, radio personality Mrs. Grant from 94.9MIXfm joined the Cancer Conquerors for a get Fit Workout. She was kind enough to stay for breakfast and share her passion for the cause. Thank you Mrs. Grant for volunteering your time and being such an amazing advocate!

TCC showed up in force on a beautiful fall Sunday morning supporting the American Cancer Society in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk. Our president Liz Almli kicked off the morning as our speaker followed by a fun warmup with high energy Zumba Instructor Lupe DeLeon. Lupe was amazing and has offered to come to TCC on a Saturday morning to lead a Zumba class. This is one class you won’t want to miss!

With the holidays fast approaching there are activities for everyone. Check out our TCC interactive calendar on our website and please be sure to RSVP for our annual Holiday lunch at the Tucson Country Club December 2nd. This event is the highlight of our year, recognizing our volunteers, watching our adventures on the big screen, and sharing friendship and holiday cheer.

Watch for our 2017 membership information arriving in your mailbox via email blast later this week. Please join us! This is YOUR organization!

TCC Get Active News

Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM.

Get Fit Class

Want to burn more calories while…. doing nothing???

Your basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is a measure of how many calories you'd burn if you just stayed in bed all day.  One of the most effective ways to raise your BMR is to increase your muscle mass with strength training at Get Fit class! Muscle tissue is the most metabolically active tissue in your body burning 3 times as many calories as fat. As a result, gaining muscle tissue helps you pack more metabolically active lean mass onto your frame, increasing your calorie burn, even when you're resting. Lets do this!

We want to encourage you to Get Fit,  so effective today we are inviting everyone to attend Get Fit classes every Tuesday and Saturday for one quarterly class fee of $50. Concerned about physical limitations? Liz, Carole, and Vianca will help you with safe modifications for all of our workouts. It’s time to get off the couch and get healthy!!!!

To enjoy the glow of good health, you must exercise. ~Gene Tunney

Our walking group is growing and going strong. If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and join the walkers at 8:00 AM every Saturday!

Get Fit class is focused on functional fitness - strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. Anyone at any fitness level can do this! TCC Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM.

Get Fit Class Payments

Great news! Effective immediately, the quarterly $50 Get Fit fee will now cover 2 classes per week - we really want you to exercise!

We can now process a credit or debit card payment at any TCC event with our Square! Please see Arlene Kutoroff, Joanne Gouldin or Deb Heilig to take advantage of this option to pay for class. You can also use a credit or debit card to pay online through Paypal in the Members Area of our website, and of course you can still pay with cash or a check payment, (checks payable to Tucson Cancer Conquerors). Check or cash payments can be given to either Annie O'Connor or Joanne Gouldin.

Organic Gardening

Our 4 raised-beds have been planted with lots of wonderful cancer-fighting winter vegetables. With our record-breaking hot weather this fall, things got off to a slow start, but things are finally starting to take off.  In the coming month, we should begin harvesting lots of leafy green veggies, such as kale, mizuna, swiss chard, and of course lettuce!

Throughout the fall you have two opportunities every week to come help tend to the TCC organic garden - Tuesdays at 4:15 PM and Saturday mornings at 9:30 AM. For more information, please contact Dawn at 520-975-4839 or timdawnmesser@gmail.com.

TCC Get Support

We invite you to come down the hall to the Resource Room on Saturdays during Coffee Café. After announcements, bring your coffee and snack, and settle into comfy furniture while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.

This month's book recommendation is A Simple Act of Gratitude: How Learning to Say Thank You Changed My Life by John Kralik.

Experiencing the downward spiral of both his personal and professional life, the author finds it very difficult to appreciate all that he does have.  Trying to climb out of the doldrums, he sets himself a goal of writing daily thank-you notes for gifts or kindnesses he'd received from friends, family, coworkers, and others along the way who had done him a good turn. Thank you note by thank you note, the author experiences an up-swing in his own life because of his renewed perspective of gratitude and appreciation.

John Kralik’s personal story shows the transforming power of saying thank you.  The book contains good messages to consider, especially as we approach the season of giving thanks for what we have, where we are, and who we know and love.

Saturday Coffee Café

Even if you don't come for exercise class, please join us at the TCC Coffee Café to share a snack, socialize and hear about all our upcoming activities! The Coffee Café happens after every Saturday morning right after exercise class at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor's Center.

Please consider signing up to bring Coffee Café snacks one Saturday this year. You can always partner with another member to make it easier, and you can be sure we will appreciate whatever snacks you bring! Speak to Jenny Waters for more information.
