Happy New Year Conquerors!

In December we celebrated the season with family and friends at our annual TCC Holiday Luncheon. This special event is a great way for us to recognize and show our appreciation to the many dedicated volunteers and community supporters who are the heart of our organization. All of our many activities would just not be possible without their support. A big Thank You to the Social Committee for putting together this wonderful event.

TCC board members Dr. Liz Almli, Arlene Kutoroff, and Dr. Lana Holstein were out and about in the community as special guests for the Correctional Officer Training Academy conference. They had the opportunity to share the mission of TCC as well as their personal experiences of juggling life when life throws you curve balls. Dr. Lana finished up with some life coaching skills on how to avoid life’s dramas by “staying in the balcony”. Thank you to COTA for inviting us!

Get Fit class stepped things up a bit with guest Zumba instructor Lupe DeLeon. Her positive vibe, edgy moves, and high energy Latin dance music had everyone on the move. We managed to sneak in 60 minutes of cardio…without anyone noticing…or complaining. Lupe and her daughter then joined us for a special holiday edition of our Coffee Café. Thank you to Lupe for volunteering your time and to the board for sponsoring breakfast.

In 2017 watch for a special section in our newsletter featuring a different community partner each month. The Cancer Conquerors truly appreciate their support and helping us to get the word out about the many programs we have to offer. Please be sure to thank them when you see them out in the community.

We would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our board members whose terms are up this January: Jojo Gouldin, Annie O’Conner, and Jody Hayden. Though they will no longer be serving on the board, they will remain active in TCC to join us for the fun!

A warm welcome to our newly elected board members: MaryLou Martinez, Dr. Lana Holstein, and Sherry Evans. All of them have been involved in TCC for many years. They are active committee members with so much to offer and are passionate about our mission!

The New Year is always a good time to make a commitment to yourself to live each day like it is your best.  Let us support and empower you to improve your fitness, nutrition, and outlook on life. Be sure to check out our new Membership Program and all its benefits, plus it’s a great way to support TCC. Friends and family are always welcome. Join us!*

TCC Get Active News

Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM.

Get Fit Class

Over the last decade Americans have become increasingly sedentary, spending 93% of our lifetimes indoors and 73% of each waking day sitting – breakfast table to car, to desk job, back to car, to dinner table, to couch, and finally, to bed. Research shows that these long periods of physical inactivity increase your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.

Your body was made to move so when it doesn’t get regular physical activity muscles and joints become stiff and sore, and mentally you feel moody, sluggish, and tired. It’s important to get up every hour, whether it’s setting a reminder alarm at work to get up and stretch, pacing while you chat on the phone, or getting up every TV commercial to move around.

Actually putting exercise on your calendar each day is important or it just won’t happen. So often we tell ourselves, “I feel so tired I can’t possibly exercise today”. What we need to tell ourselves is “I feel so tired I NEED to exercise today!” TCC has so many options to Get Active:  two fun Get fit classes per week, group hikes, walks, organic gardening, and fitness field trips. The New Year is just around the corner. Time to take action. Join us!

Concerned about physical limitations? Anyone can do our Get Fit Classes. Liz, Carole, and Vianca will help you with safe modifications for all of our workouts.

Our walking group continues to grow! If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and join the walkers at 8:00 AM every Saturday!

Get Fit class is focused on functional fitness - strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. Anyone at any fitness level can do this! TCC Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM.

Organic Gardening

A few frosty nights finally put an end to our eggplant, peppers, and basil, but our winter veggies are thriving. We're harvesting lots of leafy greens, broccoli raab, and radishes.  Did you know that radishes are in same cancer-fighting cruciferous family as broccoli and cabbage? Radishes are low in calories, high in fiber and antioxidants, and can be enjoyed raw, pickled, sautéed, or roasted! We also have cilantro, parsley, dill, and chives growing.

So stop on by the garden on Saturdays after Coffee Cafe and we'll send you home with some sprigs of fresh herbs to liven up your home cooked meals. Most weeks we are also at the garden on Tuesdays from 4:15 to 5:15 PM. If you're interested in helping out with the garden or have any gardening questions, contact Dawn at 520-975-4839 or timdawnmesser@gmail.com.

TCC Get Support

We invite you to come down the hall to the Resource Room on Saturdays during Coffee Café. After announcements, bring your coffee and snack, and settle into comfy furniture while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.

The Juicing Bible, Second Edition
Book Review by Sue Gilles

If your New Year’s Resolutions include healthy eating, you might wish to consult this book. But be prepared to be overwhelmed with information; true to its title, it is very comprehensive!

The author is a recognized culinary herbalist and professional home economist who describes the major body systems, many common health concerns, and how natural foods and herbs are necessary for maximal health. She explains that the value of juicing is that it provides an easy, digestible, and tasty way to make sure you get your “daily 8” - 5 servings of fresh vegetables and 3 of fresh fruit - for optimal health.

Separate sections on healthy vegetables, fruits and herbs include their uses, selection, storage and handling. The book is attractive, well organized, with appetizing pictures and very clear instructions.

Saturday Coffee Café

Even if you don't come for exercise class, please join us at the TCC Coffee Café to share a snack, socialize and hear about all our upcoming activities! The Coffee Café happens after every Saturday morning right after exercise class at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor's Center.

Please consider signing up to bring Coffee Café snacks one Saturday this year. You can always partner with another member to make it easier, and you can be sure we will appreciate whatever snacks you bring! Speak to Jenny Waters for more information.

CureToday Partnership

Tucson Cancer Conquerors is proud to be an Advocate Partner with CURE Magazine! You can now find information about TCC in the Advocates section of the CureToday website, as well as lots of great articles about new research, new treatments, and other Advocacy Partner content.
