Hello Conquerors!

What better way to celebrate February than with our monthly birthday dinner! Our members outdid themselves with a pot luck spread that made Chef Ken proud.  Since he is also a February baby, he graciously provided us with a delicious birthday cake, and we in turn provided his new pup Buster with some TCC swag. Looks like TCC has a new mascot.

The TCC educational event for this quarter was a refresher course on the operation of our Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) generously donated to our organization by the Gootter Foundation. Troy from Jumpstart also reviewed how to properly perform chest compressions and gave us plenty of opportunity to refine our lifesaving skills. If you were ever hesitant about joining us for an invigorating workout, don’t worry. We’ve got your covered…

Next stop – Lunch! This month we took over the First Watch Cafe in the Williams Center. The food was great and we enjoyed the opportunity to get to know one another better. Our social committee is always in search of a venue with a private room that can accommodate our energetic crew so let us know if you have any fun ideas.

Our many programs and adventures would not be possible without the support of our community partners. This month we would like to show our heartfelt appreciation to Dr Kayla Boyer of Speedway Veterinary Hospital for her generous support of our TCC programs. Thank You Dr. Boyer!

Don’t forget to please check out our interactive calendar at www.YouCanConquer.org for upcoming events and consider supporting TCC by joining our new Membership program. We have something for everyone!

 TCC Get Active News

Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM.

Proper strength training is an important component of any fitness program, helping to build calorie burning lean muscle mass and strengthening bones at risk for osteoporosis. The beauty of strength training is you can actually use your own body weight anytime, anywhere, without the need for a gym or extra equipment. Body weight workouts are ideal for all fitness levels, mimicking real life moves and teaching your muscles to be coordinated and strong for activities of daily living. Time to Get Fit and join us at the park for Planks, Push-ups and curb step-ups. Take a quick break on a park bench with some triceps dips, and finish off with walking lunges to our Coffee Café!

Click here to read the full article on GetHealthyU.com.

Most often, it is not the workout that gets us out of bed in the morning. It is the friendships and unspoken bonds of those counting on us to show up.

Concerned about physical limitations? Anyone can do our Get Fit Classes. Liz, Carole, and Vianca will help you with safe modifications for all of our workouts.

Our walking group continues to grow! If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and join the walkers at 8:00 AM every Saturday!

Organic Gardening

March is a transition month in Tucson for vegetable gardening. We will be pulling out most of our winter veggies to make room to plant our summer vegetables.  But some winter vegetables, such as swiss chard can handle heat quite well and can be grown almost year round.  Swiss chard, a relative of spinach and beets, is a nutritional powerhouse -- an excellent source of vitamins K, A, and C, as well as a good source of magnesium, potassium, iron, and dietary fiber. Not sure how to prepare swiss chard? Click here for a delicious Swiss Chard Lasagna recipe.

Stop on by the garden on Saturdays after Coffee Cafe and we'll send you home with some sprigs of fresh herbs to liven up your home cooked meals. Most weeks we are also at the garden on Tuesdays from 4:15 to 5:15 PM. If you're interested in helping out with the garden or have any gardening questions, contact Dawn at 520-975-4839 or timdawnmesser@gmail.com.

TCC Resource Room

After Coffee Café announcements, we invite you to settle into the comfy furniture in the resource room while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.

Heart Humor and Healing, Ed. by Patty Wooten, RN
Book Review by Sue Gilles

This is a small bedside book, a collection of inspirational and humorous stories and quotes, none more than a very small page long. The editor is a nurse who recognizes the role that humor and a positive attitude play in healing and health. Those quoted include Albert Schweitzer, Will Rogers, George Burns, Jack Kornfield, children, and anonymous patients. Something for everyone.
