Hello Conquerors!

Spring has sprung! The weather and wildflowers are beautiful so don’t miss the opportunity to Mindfully Meander with Dawn through our desert flowers and explore our Sonoran canyons on a second Sunday hike with Deb. It’s the perfect time to tend our organic garden at Felicia’s Farm and let’s not forget that exercising at the under the trees at the park sure beats being inside a gym!

March is the annual American Cancer Society’s Climb to Conquer Cancer walk up A Mountain. TCC members walked with Phyllis Geres in memory of her daughter and TCC member Laura Pippins. Thank you Phyllis for continuing to be such an important supporter to our TCC members!

The Cancer Conquerors also had the honor of being recognized at a Saturday night Tucson Roadrunner Hockey Game. The game was so much fun, with friends and family all attending to support us being invited down onto the ice!

Our many programs and adventures would not be possible without the support of our community partners. This month we would like to show our heartfelt appreciation to Certified Personal Trainer and Northwest YMCA Group Wellness Coordinator, Pandora Larsen.  Pandora has been gracious enough to volunteer her time as a guest Get Fit class instructor, sharing her passion for health and fitness with our TCC members. In April she will transition to a new position, taking on the role of Lifestyle Director for the Highlands at Dove Mountain, overseeing all educational programs related to exercise and wellness. She is looking forward to her new venture and the opportunity to enrich the lives of the residents in the Dove Mountain community. She will also continue to support the TCC fitness program. Thank you Pandora!

Don’t forget to please check out our interactive calendar at www.YouCanConquer.org - April is loaded with fun activities and plenty of opportunities to Get Active, Get Social, and Get Support! Join us!

 TCC Get Active News

Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM.

In our Get Fit class we often focus on exercises that help to strengthen our CORE, but what exactly is that? There is more to CORE training than just working your Abs. A CORE workout circumferentially targets all of the muscles of your trunk: Abs, Obliques, Back, and Glutes. These muscles provide support to your spine and influence the way you stand, squat and sit.

Daily activities such as sitting at the computer or lifting grocery bags can put significant strain on your body making you prone to injury and low back pain. Having a solid core acts as a natural corset, flattening your belly, supporting your back and spine, and improving your balance and posture.

There are so many modifications for strengthening your core that anyone can do this.  So….the next time your fitness teams helps you to stand taller, stronger, and steadier by including planks and supermans in your workout, be sure to thank them!

Concerned about physical limitations? Anyone can do our Get Fit Classes. Liz, Carole, and Vianca will help you with safe modifications for all of our workouts.

Our walking group continues to grow! If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and join the walkers at 8:00 AM every Saturday!

Organic Gardening

Spring is here and our summer veggies are planted! We have planted 4 varieties of tomatoes, sweet and spicy peppers, a few eggplant, and baby squash, beans, and cucumbers are just starting to pop up. We also have a small herb garden starting with sage, thyme, and parsley.

Did you know that parsley contains the highest concentration of all plants of apigenin, a flavonoid which has shown anti-cancer properties! So don't just use parsley as a garnish, add it to your salads, soups, or sauces.

Click here to heck out this great recipe for Quinoa Tabbouleh that uses lots of parsley!

Coffee Café, the TCC Resource Room and more!

Saturday Coffee Café

Even if you don't come for exercise class, please join us at the TCC Coffee Café to share a snack, socialize and hear about all our upcoming activities! The Coffee Café happens after every Saturday morning right after exercise class at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor's Center.

Please consider signing up to bring Coffee Café snacks one Saturday this year. You can always partner with another member to make it easier, and you can be sure we will appreciate whatever snacks you bring! Speak to Jenny Waters for more information.

TCC Resource Room

After Coffee Café announcements, we invite you to settle into the comfy furniture in the resource room while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.

This month we wanted to highlight a few of the other resources available to members in the TCC Resource Room.

In a rack on one of the bookcases, we have copies of the periodical Nutrition Action. This magazine was recommended by Michelle Bratton, a nutritionist at Banner Health Cancer Center. Nutrition Action has updated information based on research regarding food products and health.

We also have a subscription to Cure Magazine that provides updated information on cancer treatment, advancements in prevention of cancer recurrence and much more.

And finally, don't forget to check the Bulletin Board in the hallway where you'll find information about community educational lectures, schedules of alternative therapies in the local resource centers and other such resources.
