April was a beautiful month to be outdoors hiking, gardening, and exercising in the park. Indoors, TCC Members were active in community outreach, sponsoring information tables at the Arizona Oncology Foundation open house and the TMC Survive Well Symposium where TCC Member Dawn Messer led a Mindful Meandering group. Other members took advantage of the many lectures offered that focused on healthy survivorship. We are so fortunate that our community has so many free educational opportunities and resources available!

Our very own Cancer Conqueror Rocky LaRose has volunteered her time and photographic expertise to help us with our new Membership Directory. She will be attending the monthly luncheon May 19th at La Paloma Country Club and the Get Fit workout May 20th to take individual photos of everyone. As our membership grows, this is a great way to get to know one another. We want everyone included so if these dates don’t work for you we will make other arrangements. If you have not signed up for a TCC membership it’s easy, plus it’s a great way to support TCC! To sign up and see all of the benefits of membership, all you have to do is click here.

The success of our organization would not be possible without the support of our community partners. This month we would like to show our heartfelt appreciation to TCC advisory board member Dr. Marilyn Croghan and Becky O’Hara, Director of Development, for the Arizona Oncology Foundation. They joined us for Get Fit Class and our potluck birthday celebration to share with our group all of the comprehensive services the Foundation has to offer, providing critical support to cancer patients and their families. They have been a wonderful support to our members and our TCC organization. Thank you! Our TCC annual retreat is coming up fast! The retreat is such a great opportunity to get to know one another better, be adventurous, dine with friends, learn a little something, and RELAX! If you are unable to attend the May retreat, not to worry. Watch for details on our mini-retreat in September… right here in Tucson!

TCC Get Active News Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning Saturday, June 3rd, Get Fit classes will move to 7:00 AM for the summer, followed by Coffee Café at 8:00 AM. Life is a balancing act!Including routine balance training into our workouts is important because everyday life is a balance challenge! Anytime you reach up for something on a shelf, bend down or twist to pick something up, or step on an uneven surface, you are at risk for falls and injuries.
|
Through a complex system of environmental feedback, cues from the bottom of your feet, and proprioceptive (body position) feedback to your brain, your nervous system senses which muscles to activate or deactivate to maintain your desired position.
|
Balance training helps your brain to recognize changes in terrain and challenges the nervous systems ability to activate the correct muscles in the correct sequence. By practicing your postural control daily, you will improve your joint stability and your ability to make quick, coordinated movement corrections, increasing the ease of daily tasks and decreasing the chance of injury. Bring some balance to your life and join us for Get Fit class! Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip toe if you must, but take the step. ~GetHealthyU.com Our walking group continues to grow! If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and join the walkers at 8:00 AM every Saturday!

TCC Resource RoomAfter Coffee Café announcements, we invite you to settle into the comfy furniture in the resource room while you leaf through information about community resources, or consider a book to borrow from our lending library.
|
Welcome to the new chair of the Resource Room committee, Lana Holstein and new committee member Jenny Waters! You are always welcome to come in to the Resource Room to browse or for a quiet chat. The Resource Room committee is also pleased to announce the launch of a new book discussion group, the TCC Book Groupies. The first Book Groupies meeting will be held in the Resource Room on Saturday, June 17, right after Coffee Café, and we’ll discuss A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas (see highlight below). We look forward to your joining us then or for any of the upcoming discussions, to be held on the third Saturday of every month.
|
A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas is the highlighted book for the month of May. The title comes from the Australian Aboriginal tradition of sleeping with dogs for warmth – and a “three dog night” is an especially cold one. In the cold aftermath of her husband’s devastating brain injury, Abigail Thomas needed the warmth, comfort, and companionship of her three dogs, along with the help of family and friends, to begin to “put a life together” for them both. Her memoir is an honest, unflinching, and moving account of how she came to love her husband as he had become, to “love who I am when I’m with him,” and to regain her love of life.
