Hello Conquerors!

The monsoons have brought much-needed relief from the heat, cooling things off for Get Fit class and helping our garden to grow. We continue to look for opportunities to stay cool and this coming month we found the perfect spot. TCC reserved a private screening at the Roadhouse Theater for our group to view the film…you guessed it…Wonder Woman! More details below but this is a great time to join us for a social hour, raffle prizes, and fun!

Our July Birthday celebration was made extra special by TCC supporter Skylee Edmiston and her students from the Tucson College of Beauty. After a delicious dinner we were pampered with hand and shoulder massages AND cake. Thank you to Skylee and her crew!

The success of our organization would not be possible without the ongoing support of our friends and family. This month we would like to show our heartfelt appreciation to the Friends and Family of Ramona Hendricks. Ramona’s husband Ed organized a fundraiser in her honor to benefit TCC. Kent Van Stelle, owner of The Rock welcomed us to his venue, donating the cover charge from the door.

Teresa Smitch pulled together an amazing raffle with donations from friends and family. The Andy Hersey Band provided the entertainment and donated the proceeds from their CD sales that evening. A big thank you to all of the TCC members who helped support the event by serving food, selling raffle tickets and just showing up to celebrate the life of Ramona, a beloved TCC member and friend.

If you haven’t been to TCC, our Year in Review at the end of August is a great time to learn about TCC and share a tasty breakfast with friends. As always, information on all of our events is just a click away on our interactive calendar at www.YouCanConquer.org. We have something for everyone so grab a friend and be sure to join us!

 TCC Get Active News

Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 7:00 AM.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Get Fit classes now start at 7:00 AM for the summer, followed by Coffee Café at 8:00 AM.

Why YOU NEED Weight Training

Modern exercise science shows that working with weights (resistance training)—whether that weight is a dumbbell, medicine ball, or your own body—may be the best exercise for lifelong physical function and fitness.

As we age bone losses outpace the creation of new bone, making our bones less dense and more susceptible to fracture. This acceleration is especially pronounced in post-menopausal women, cancer patients on hormone blocking medications, and those who are sedentary.

Through a process known as bone remodeling, strength training stimulates the development of bone cells (osteoblasts) that build new bone. Not only does this strengthen existing bone, but it also improves postural deviations by decreasing the risk of compression fractures of the spine.

Then there is the benefit of building muscle. In addition to making us stronger, muscle is metabolically more active, burning more calories, even at rest. Scientific research has linked strength training to improved focus and cognitive function, better balance, less anxiety and a greater sense of well-being. Anyone can do it…why not give it a try?

For more info on the benefits of strength training, click here to check out the full article and join us at Get Fit class!

Join the TCC Walkers every Saturday Morning!

If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and join the walkers at 7:00 AM every Saturday!

Organic Gardening

The monsoon rains have really perked up our garden and our squash vines are taking over our plots! Speaking of squash - August 8th is National Zucchini Day - I kid you not!

One of the great things about zucchini is how versatile it is - it can be steamed, sautéed, grilled, stuffed, made into bread, pasta, fries, chips and more.

Click here for 30 great zucchini recipes, including Dawn’s favorite zucchini pancake recipe.

Do you know how to tell a male zucchini blossom from a female blossom? It’s easy - the female has the baby! And for that baby to grow into an edible squash, a bee must take pollen from a male blossom to the female blossom.

If you are interested in learning more about the TCC Garden, please contact Dawn at 520-975-4839 or timdawnmesser@gmail.com.

Coffee Café, the TCC Resource Room and more!

Saturday Coffee Café

Even if you don't come for exercise class, please join us at the TCC Coffee Café to share a snack, socialize and hear about all our upcoming activities! The Coffee Café happens after every Saturday morning right after exercise class at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor's Center.

Please consider signing up to bring Coffee Café snacks one Saturday this year. You can always partner with another member to make it easier, and you can be sure we will appreciate whatever snacks you bring! Speak to Jenny Waters for more information.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Coffee Café now starts at 8:00 AM for the summer.

TCC Resource Room

After Coffee Café announcements, we invite you to come down to the comfy TCC Resource Room to enjoy a quiet chat or to browse and check out a book from our lending library. We also offer information about community support services and local events of interest and a Member Resource Directory. The Resource Room is open Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings during Get Fit classes and during Saturday Coffee Café. The TCC Book Groupies meet on the third Saturday morning of each month.

On Saturday, August 19 at 8:30 am, the TCC Book Groupies will meet in the Resource Room to discuss Breaking Trail: A Climbing Life by Arlene Blum. This autobiography is the compelling story of one of the first women to climb the highest mountains in the world.  Sue Gilles will lead the discussion and all are welcome!

Looking ahead to the Book Groupies selection for September:  Are you a “doubter” or a “believer” when it comes to making decisions about your medical treatment?  Your Medical Mind: How To Decide What Is Right For You by Jerome Groopman MD and Pamela Hartzband MD explores how we can better understand our own attitudes and make the best possible decisions about our own healthcare.  This book is an important resource, whether we are making choices in urgent medical situations or for our long-term health.  The authors base their wisdom on research, their wide-ranging experience as physicians, illustrative patient stories, and their own personal stories. Cathy Pensak will lead our discussion of this book when we meet in September.
