Hello Conquerors!

As the summer draws to a close, it's good to see many of our members are back from their travels and back to TCC.

Our August birthday dinner was a packed house with so many August birthdays to celebrate. Not only did Chef Ken make this months birthday cake, he also entertained us with a tasty focaccia demo with garlic and onions from our very own TCC garden. While chef’s culinary skills are fun to watch, we also learned the valuable lesson of how to cut onions without crying…make someone else do it! With cooler weather on its way and so many members joining us to celebrate, we may need to move our birthday party to the courtyard for a BBQ and will need a few extra hands for set up and take down so please consider helping out on the logistics committee!

August is also time for our annual TCC Year in Review. The board sponsored a delicious breakfast while members learned about where we have been this last year and what exciting things still lie ahead for the future. As an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, we value transparency and take our responsibility of good stewardship of donor dollars very seriously. We are so glad so many of you were able to join us to learn about how we support all of our TCC programs. Thank you to all of you who signed up to help out on a committee. Your contributions are appreciated! If you were not able to attend our Year in Review meeting, please pick up an evaluation form at the next TCC event. This is YOUR organization and your feedback is important to us!

All of our many programs would not be possible without the amazing support of our community partners. A big thank you this month to Dr. David Jeck and the entire Radiology Limited organization. We were fortunate to have our very own Cancer Conqueror Terie Tutt nominate TCC for the Rad Ltd mini-grant. This generous donation is being directed towards our September mini – retreat, making the event affordable for all of our members to attend. Thank you!

We finished out the month with a stay cool Get Fit field trip to the Roadhouse Cinemas. Members enjoyed a social hour and a relaxing stretch warm up for those big leather recliners. Carole Wymer provided opportunities to win memorabilia prizes and then, the moment we all came for, a private screening of Wonder Woman!

As always, information on all of our events is just a click away on our interactive calendar at www.YouCanConquer.org. We have something for everyone so grab a friend and be sure to join us!

 TCC Get Active News

Get Fit classes are held at Brandi Fenton Park Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM and Saturday mornings at 7:00 AM.

Got back pain?

Tight hamstrings are present in most people who suffer from chronic lower back pain. The constant pull of these tight muscles forces the lumbar spine, (lower 5 vertebrae), into a forward bent posture, putting strain on the low back and decreasing the overall mobility of the hip joints. Making things worse is that many of us sit most of the day. That bent leg position further shortens the hamstring muscle really throwing things out of balance when we stand.

Initially, it can be very challenging and uncomfortable to stretch your hamstrings. The seated hamstring stretch is a very safe way to stretch without injuring your lumbar discs. Stretches can also be performed lying on your back, increasing the stretch with a band or towel behind the thigh. Stretches should be performed throughout the day and gently held for 10 to 30 seconds. Come and stretch with us at GetFit!

Click here to read the 5 Stretches To Ease Your Lower-Back Pain article at Prevention.com.

* Numbness, tingling or severe pain should be evaluated by your physician.

Join the TCC Walkers every Saturday Morning!

If you can walk, you can do it. You just need to take that first step and GET MOVING. We have something for everyone so bring a friend and join the walkers at 7:00 AM every Saturday!

Organic Gardening

While many of the summer veggies have started to fade, our Orient Wonder Yard Long beans have been thriving. While our beans may not have measured a full yard, they've come close!!

Green beans are not only tasty they have lots of health benefits too!

For our warm summer days, how about trying a recipe for a cold green bean salad. Click here for the recipe at FoodNetwork.com.

Coffee Café, the TCC Resource Room and more!

Saturday Coffee Café

Even if you don't come for exercise class, please join us at the TCC Coffee Café to share a snack, socialize and hear about all our upcoming activities! The Coffee Café happens after every Saturday morning right after exercise class at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor's Center.

Please consider signing up to bring Coffee Café snacks one Saturday this year. You can always partner with another member to make it easier, and you can be sure we will appreciate whatever snacks you bring! Speak to Jenny Waters for more information.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Coffee Café now starts at 8:00 AM for the summer.

TCC Resource Room

After Coffee Café announcements, we invite you to come down to the comfy TCC Resource Room to enjoy a quiet chat or to browse and check out a book from our lending library. We also offer information about community support services and local events of interest and a Member Resource Directory. The Resource Room is open Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings during Get Fit classes and during Saturday Coffee Café. The TCC Book Groupies meet on the third Saturday morning of each month.

For the October Book Groupies meeting, Ambre Cole will lead the discussion of The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. A thrilling new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author explores the lives of a Chinese mother and her daughter who has been adopted by an American couple. Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. There is ritual and routine, and it has been ever thus for generations. Then one day a jeep appears at the village gate—the first automobile any of them have seen—and a stranger arrives.
